When building web pages that we want people to link to on facebook I’ve been adding some small code and images to control the thumbnail that is offered in facebook. Here is what im talking about making:
So for starts we make a div and place it at the very top of the content. The big thing is to make it the very FIRST image in the mark up. I often place it right after the opening body tag. I call it Facebook Bait:
I would even recommend adding some other images as well, this way all the thumbnail options are controlled.
Next up is the CSS, its really simple:
That’s it. Now if someone links to your site then then thumbnail options will be exactly what you want them to be.
Another use? Well say groveshark linked to an song to share, then the album cover could be the controlled thumbnail. Or say a blog post about icon design. You don’t want the ads on the blog to be the thumbnail you want it to be the icons.
This could easily be added to wordpress, joomla or your favorite CMS. Go on try it, let me know how it works for you.
